In the mid 70’s Chris Craft set out to compete with the legendary Ray Hunt designed 31 Bertram Moppie known for its Deep-V hull’s offshore performance. Being the obvious choice for the job, Chris Craft contracted Ray Hunt for this project. While designing the 30 Sportsman, Hunt corrected some of the short comings of the 31 Moppie, increasing the beam and freeboard resulting in a more stable and dry ride. The improvements of the hull design showed, and the Chris Craft Sportsman proved to outperform the Bertram Moppie. However production of the Sportsman was quickly halted following a law suit by Bertram claiming the hulls were too similar. For this reason only 46 of these boats were ever produced making them extremely rare. Only a handful exist today in running order. At a whopping 12,300lbs and an 11’11” beam these boats are among the most sturdy and stable boats ever designed. This example has been completely restored in 2012 with some contemporary refinements. The design refinements and mechanical upgrades were planned by the owner who was a former design consultant to Chris-Craft. His intent was to develop a contemporary version of the Ray Hunt designed Sportsman yet retain it’s original essence and DNA. This comprehensive restoration with modifications was accomplished by Mayea Boat Works in Fair Haven, Michigan. The boat is in showroom condition. Mechanical Upgrades: 425 hp 496 CID Crusader V8s, heat exchangers, stainless 1 1/2-shafts 18 x 22 Nibral wheels, 4 1/2” exhaust system, all new instrumentation/gauges with all new boat wiring, hydraulic steering, four heavy duty batteries, Garmin GPS, new aluminum fuel tank, trim tabs, new plastic water and holding tanks, electric head, galley with new refrigerator. Design Refinements: Styled bow pulpit with extended side rails, splash rail faired into integrated swim platform, windshield hydraulic lower opening vents, built in beam width width stern seat, mid ship storage area below deck, engine-box covers fitted with power lifters, all hatches fitted with gas struts, deck hatch fitted with skylight, complete professional awl grip paint job.
